So have you ever heard the words, " Your child is great but have you ever thought about medicating him for his behavior in class". Many parents are faced with this news every day. The truth of the matter is, is that there are thousands of children that are being medicated improperly in this country for behavioral issues. Some of these children have been diagnosed properly and some were not. If you have been faced with this decision you should definitely eliminate all alternatives to help your child's behavior first.
Steps to take before medicating your ADHD child
1. First and foremost evaluate your child's eating and sleeping pattern. If your child is too tired they may be having difficulty sitting still, talking too much, playing at inappropriate times and then of course zoning out when ever possible. This is what we call the overtired child. They are trying everything in their power to keep themselves awake. Also keeping track of what your child is eating will come in handy later on.
2. Devise a Diet plan that will help not hurt your child.
Most children with ADD/ADHD have various food sensitivities that contribute to behavioral issues. In particularly artificial colors and flavors are ones that are the most common. These are especially more sensitive in boys than in girls. Also if your child consumes a large amount of sugar that should be eliminated all together. If you try limiting sweets, and sugary foods there should be a dramatic change in your child's behavior in general. There will also be a greater ability to focus better. For more information on diet plans for ADD/ADHD children check Dr. Feingold's website. http://www.feingold.org/
3. Consider Chiropractic care!
Chiropractic care is very important to your children no matter what their health issues are. If you have a child with ADD/ADHD it is even more valuable. Chiropractic care helps to calm the nervous system down which enables the brain to communicate with the rest of the body. Usually in a child with ADD/ADHD their nervous system is so ramped up that the brain can not sift through and sort what is important and what is not important, which in return does not allow them to focus. It is kind of like when there is static on your telephone, you can hear the other person but not clearly!
After you have tried all of these options you should see a dramatic change in your child's behavior and learning patterns. If there are still some signs that have not diminished then it may be necessary for your child to seek help with a psychologist or psychiatrist, due to the fact that they are the only trained medical professionals qualified to diagnose this condition accurately.

The lazy days of summer are here! Weekends include playing catch with the kids int he backyard, swimming in the pool and having family barbecues. It all sounds picturesque doesn't it? But just a few minor oversights can turn a leisurely afternoon into an evening spent in the emergency room.
Backyard safety: It doesn't matter if your kids are old or young there are a few things that should always be considered before letting them run unfettered and unmonitored through your backyard. Gardening tools should be stored in a tool shed or garage. Lawnmowers and gas powered tools should be locked up when not in use. Walkways should be cleared of objects, debris and overgrowth. Check fences and playground equipment for exposed nails and screws.
Pool safety: It takes as little as 2 inches of water and 2 seconds of time for a child to drown and brain damage is almost assured in 4 minutes. To prevent pool injuries here are some tips: Give your children full attention and keep background noise to a minimum. Always have your children wear personal floatation devices if they can not swim. Teach young children to play within arm's reach. Alarm your pool area.
Barbecue Safety: Some tips to make for safe barbecues: Use pylons or sawhorses to mark a caution zone of at least 3 feet around the barbecue. Never leave the bbq pit unattended and never allow a child to monitor the bbq. Once the fire has been started never add starter fluid . Always use long handled bbq utensitls. Most importantly always keep a fire extinguisher handy.
The Majority of childhood injuries occur between June and August so, take a moment today to ensure you child has the safest, funnest summer yet with these simple and easy safety tips.

Here are a few articles that I came across that are supporting chiropractic care for children. If you have ever wandered why on earth a child would need chiropractic care then you should read these articles. Here is a little brief explanation of why children might need chiropractic care. First off, children experience their first trauma the minute they are born. Even the most natural of deliveries can cause trauma to a little infant's growing spine. If there is some interference in that new born spine then a chain of events can occur that can go unnoticed. Certain things like: colic, ear infections, sleep irregularities, not growing at a normal pace, and the list goes on. These things may go unnoticed because we think that it is just normal baby stuff that we have all been through. So, in my opinion and someone who is real passionate in treating children every day, every child should have a chiropractor on their team. Now I am not saying that a chiropractor should replace a pediatrician, but the chiropractor and the pediatrician should certainly work together for your child's best health.

Have you ever wandered what your spinal cord is for and how much it really does affect? Well many of us know what happens if there is a major spinal cord injury. We learned this from Christopher Reeves, when he had a major fall and was paralyzed from the neck down. The actual function of the spine is to house and protect the nervous system, which is made up of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. As chiropractors we call this the Master Controller. Why is that, it is because it controls all the other systems of the body. The Immune system, digestive system, respiratory system, circulatory system, as well as sleep and body restoration is controlled by the Master controller or the Nervous system.
Just some simple explanation of how it all works. First the brain is like a large computer that sends signals down the spinal cord to the muscles, organs and glands by way of the nerves. So in essence the spinal cord is like a large interstate that has lots of exits. So at each level of the spine there are exit ramps so to say that take you to different muscles, organs and glands.
Now we get into the fun part of this blog, talking about what makes the spine not function correctly! Well in the chiropractic world we refer to the minor traffic jams of the spine as Vertebral Subluxations. They are just that, traffic jams. Vertebral subluxation may occur when minor falls or traumas cause the small verebrae of the spine or pelvis to move out of alignment. Think of the is as construction on the major highway. When a vertebral subluxation occurs there is interference through the spinal column and to wherever the nerve that is affected is going to. So take our road construction example, the traffic can flow but it may be slow at times and may not get you to your destination as quickly as you want to.
So what kind of symptoms can you expect from having a vertebral subluxation?
Well that can vary. If the vertebral subluxation or the traffic jam of information from your brain is in the neck you may experience a range of symptoms from headaches to sinus trouble to ear infections, behavioral problems, thyroid issues and so much more. If there are interferences in the lower back and pelvis you may experience trouble with digestion, pain in the legs and feet, and a general lack of energy.
Now I know this is a lot to take in, but I can tell you from experience of being a chiropractic patient for the last 22 years that when there is interference in my spine from vertebral subluxations I am definitely more vulnerable to changes in how I feel.

Did you know that Chiropractic care can help with Allergies and Asthma for all ages? When the body's immune system is weakened it opens the body up to having more problems with allergies and infections. To strengthen your immune system there are many things you can do. You can eat healthy whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables. You can decrease the amount of dairy products that you take in because these will increase mucous production and slow your immune system down. Another way to increase your immune system is to take a good multi vitamin, take an addition vitamin E as this will give you antioxidants and will help to repair mucous linings in your body. You also need to take some vitamin C, this amount will vary from person to person. Then one of the most important aspects of increasing your immunity is to get regular chiropractic adjustments. Since your nervous system is directly linked to your immune system, if there is interference to the spine then there is interference to your immune system and it will not be 100%. So if you suffer from Allergies and Asthma, put these simple things into play and consult your chiropractor for regular adjustments to improve your health through allergy season.

I have many parents ask me why their child would need chiropractic care. The simple answer is that if you want a healthy immune system and a strong nervous system then you should get your children adjsuted. The truth of the matter is, is that if you want your child to have the healthiest life possible they need to be adjusted.
Some people as well children don't have back pain or neck pain like adults do, do they? Well as a matter of fact they may have those kinds of pains they just can't express themselves like we can. They cry when they are unhappy or unconmfortable, they may only take a bottle to one side or nurse to one side beause they are uncomfortable to turn their head to the other side. They may scream or cry when they are in their car seats because of tightness in their hips. They may trip, lean, or use one side of their body more than the other. Children express their discomfort in many ways, we just have to look and listen to them to understand that they are having some problems.
Then next question people ask me is, well how did they get a problem in their spine that would need chiropractic treatment? Children actually have their first brush with trauma to the spine at the time of birth. All birthing processes no matter how natural is trauma to a new born. The more naturally the process usually means there is less interference with the delivery which means there is less interefence with the baby's spine. Which in turn means that the more intereference with the delivery the greater the trauma is to the baby. After the birth process there are many times in a young child's life when trauma is an issue. First we have sitting for numerous hours of the day in an exersaucer, walker, swing, jumper, etc. Then our little ones learn to crawl and during this process they fall and roll over and bump into things. Then they get adventurous and learn to walk in which they fall down and give direct trauma to the spine. As our children grow they then strat playing sports and having PE in school and usually fall down and get hurt.
With every trauma your child has no matter how small, it all affects the spine, nervous system and immune system, which in turn affects your child's overall health and well being.
Every child should have a great health care team to oversee all their needs, this should include a pediatrician, dentist and a Chiropractor!
